Personal notes on Hotlaps in Bar Harbor Big thanks again for all those who made this week's Hotlaps possible !
After sailing a few laps with different boats, I've made my opinion, so let me share it.
For me, this lap is all about the start and finish!
To get a good start IMHO, try to find the right angle to squeeze by the islets in SUGAR REEF, and speed through the line, aiming directly at the point of the 1st turn in SPOONDRIFT (end of boat wharf). For a good finish, timing the final tack right is essential! Depending on the boat you sail, pick the spot where you will aim for the finish line on the highest possible point of sail. For some boats, it is ahead of the islets. For other, you need to cross into STILLWATER BAY and sail thru the islets just like at the start.
Another point worth mentioning also is the only gybe, after St-Martin airfields. This gybe needs to be done right or one can lose much speed here. Again, for some boats, it might pay to hold off a while and gybe at the last possible moment just in front of RainbowSails so you can point high enough towards the next turn. Whatever the boat, some angle to the wind is always faster than straight downwind...
Finally, let's not forget the "weather". There are times when lag gets worse... Take a break then and try your chance later.. it is worth it as the regions are among the most beautiful in SL waters.
Cheers and Fair Winds !
