SL Lag seems to affect all of us to various degrees and we all have our thoughts on what causes it. The following links may be of some help on "fighting the Lag Monster".

I have a Dummies question about SL max bandwidth and "wifi". I can quite understand why one might reduce the bandwidth below indicated setting* when using public wifi to reach the internet. But the help page specifically includes home wifi (ie a WLAN connecting to a router that is for example on a broadband connection. Assuming that there is no music or video streaming going on at the same time or cloud updating etc I don't see why there is a need for the reduction. I'm sure that the Firestorm people are right, that what they say is based on experience, I'm just not sure why on a WLAN just running Firestorm one lowers the bandwidth below what the speeds measured ON THAT SAME WLAN would indicate. Of course with public wifi you have no control as to what may happen in 5 minuets time thanks to the guy across the cafe.
* I wonder if the 800 x MBS formula isnt a bit dated? I don't think Ive ever seen speeds under normal conditions below say 7 or 8 MBS (Im getting around 16 MBS now which of course is a LOT slower than whatg I get locally). To get a calculated value under 1500 means speed < 2 MBs, which is basically dead stop. So why bother with speed test why not just say set to 500 for wifi , 1000 for DSL and 1500 for cable.

Another question ... The SL Help page section on Firewalls seems to ignore Firestorm. Norton seems to have correctly identified Firestorm, so I assume theres noting to do?

I totally agree many of these "helps" are old and out of date. From my perspective, without getting too technical, I like to look at FPS (frames per second), percent CPU used (central processor) and GPU used (graphics processor). I can't control lag caused by my net connection or SL servers, but I can make sure I'm not maxing out my computer load. One utility that gives a great onscreen display of FPS, CPU and GPU % and many others, if you wish, is MSA Afterburner. It's free and does not effect performance. The download link is here.
