Cool lap! There are a few variants you may want to try in this course which makes it very interesting. Depending on the boat sailed, you won't go the same way for any of the legs. Even concentrating on 1 specific boat, it is worth trying little variations around the course. First leg: You can start on the momentum and speed of the pre-start reach, then closing on the wind to aim directly to the mark or you may prefer to sail close-hauled right after the start, aiming a bit higher than Mark #1 before accelerating towards the mark so you can round it and transition onto the downwind leg more easily. Downwind legs: Timing of when to gybe is totally up to you and the boat you sail... Some boats need to be sailed on a broad reach, others like the new Star on a more direct line down the wind... Beat (leg 3): Again, you can choose to go either side of the Leviathan on Ahab's Island. I think most will go the easy way: Close in on the wind as you round the mark, stay on the same tack going West until it is time to go South towards the next mark. That's what I do. Transitioning from beat to run: I tend to go a bit higher than the mark usually, so that the turn is not too tight, and I can really accelerate as I bear away from the wind, doing a nice circle around the mark, ending my turn as close as possible to the mark. Last leg (close-hauled again): With some boat, you will be able to sail high enough to clear the sand banks in WEEVER sim to the South. That means sailing at 45-48º from the wind, around 30ºAWA. Even with boats able to sail that high, it may be faster to sail not so close and do a double-tack to clear the sand banks. Again, up to you. On the FS, I went the direct way, on the Star, decided to go for the extra tacks. On other boats, you really dont have the choice as speed definitely drops too much when sailing higher than 35AWA / 50TWA usually. Cheers & Fair winds NotaBene: TWA: true wind angle, ie angle of the boat relative to the wind AWA: apparent wind angle, ie true wind angle corrected by speed effect
